Back in 2014, our co-founder came to us with the name of a project he had been thinking about. The idea would evolve into something that would be crazy if it worked, but the name left something to be desired. However, we agreed that the name wasn’t as important as seeing if this thing would actually work.
Suddenly, we were in Techstars, at conferences, growing our community, and sharing the name everywhere. We heard a mix of Infiniscene, Infininiscene, Infiniscean, Infinityscene, Infiscene, and our favorite: Infiniscience. These mispronunciations started off frustrating, but grew to be a funny joke we just owned.
The reality was that we needed a better name, but that is no easy task. We tried a few over the last 2 years, but if it wasn’t already trademarked by Adobe, it didn’t quite fit. We needed something simpler: less than 2 syllables, no Mississippi effect, easy to hear, understand, and spell.
After nearly 2 years, we have a name that we think suits our product perfectly. It alludes to our mission to to be lightweight and powerful. It nods towards the fact that live streaming is the act of streaming light across the internet. It’s simple and we love it. Introducing…
To represent this new name, we wanted to create a logo that better represented it. Our infinity logo has served us well, but it was time for something less common and something that would stand out. I came home with two dozen awful sketches for my co-founder, Ryan. But as always, he saw my intention. For weeks, he riffed off of it, generated more ideas of his own, and came up with an abstract of the prism idea that the whole team is excited about.
This week, you will see our name being updated across our social media, website, and products. It may take us time to replace Infiniscene everywhere. Some changes will be more technical than others. Infiniscene, Inc. will remain the legal name of our company, but from now on… our friends call us Lightstream.
